The Excel program was implemented in the Saint Paul district in the
fall of 2001 as an alternative to retention. The program is designed to
help students who need extra help in reading, writing, and math.
The
program begins with a five-week summer session. During the school year
students participate in Excel two hours a day reading and responding to

a daily Writer's Workshop, and 90 minutes a day on math.
Students end the program with another five-week summer session. The
goal is to have Excel students on track with their peers when they
finish the program.
Mrs. Christine Marks is the Excel programs' lead teacher, and she works closely with classroom teachers having students in the Excel program.
