Our Classroom 2008-2009

Students proudly show their "My Color Book" projects. This year, more than ever before, the Linwood kindergarten program is grouping students in pairs and groups of four for a variety of learning opportunities.  We start out in late fall with a partner reading program in cooperation with the University of Minnesota.  Students Reading time in kindergarten participate in a teacher lead lesson and then repeat the lesson in pairs with one student as coach and the other student the reader.  They then change rolls and this is all done in fifteen minutes - four times a week.  The program gives our students a solid understanding of letter sounds and daily practice sound spelling three letter words and eventually reading simple sentences.  Our progress is monitored by a professor in the Educational Psychology department at the U, along with her graduate students.  Known as K-PALS, (Kindergarten-Peer Dress up time is a favorite time! Assisted Learning Strategies) the program is giving our students the jump start they need to be successful readers by the end of the year.  Throughout the year our students can also be seen in small groups during math, art, and writing.
